Sophomore Test

The Sophomore Research Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW-Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff.


Eligibility Criteria
A sophomore (two years of undergraduate study after application year) or a freshmen who will have more than 24 credits after May of the current academic year or a transfer student in their first year of attendance at UW-Madison. Must be in good academic standing (2.3 cumulative GPA or above).


How to Apply
Applications include a 3 -5 page proposal and a letter of recommendation.


Selection Criteria
Evidence of the student’s intellectual contribution to the research; degree of meaningful collaboration with a faculty research mentor; extent to which the research objective is achievable within the proposed timeline.


Award Information
The student researcher receives a stipend, and faculty/staff research advisor receives a stipend for costs associated with the research (e.g., supplies, student travel related to the project). Approximately 25 Sophomore Research Fellowships will be awarded this year.


Conditions of Award
Award recipients must register for three credits of supervised research or directed study during the summer or academic year following the receipt of the award in May. The recipients must also have proposals approved by the Human Subjects and/or Animal Care and Use Committee(s) if they propose to use human or animal subjects. The recipients must also present findings at the Undergraduate Symposium and submit a research report of approximately 500 to 1000 words upon completion of research.
